Choose Cozumel for a reef-focused snorkeling day, Isla Mujeres for a combination of Caribbean scenery and snorkeling, or Holbox for a boat outing with island landscapes and village time. The best choice also depends on where you are staying and how much road and boat travel your group wants.

These islands are often grouped into one “best island” list, but that can hide the most important difference: the experience you can actually fit into a day. This comparison is for travelers staying in Cancún or the Riviera Maya and returning to their accommodation that evening.

Cozumel: make snorkeling the centerpiece

If your group wants its day to revolve around the underwater environment, start with Cozumel. Nah Experience’s private Cozumel snorkeling tour combines the ferry from Playa del Carmen with a boat reserved for your booking group, reef snorkeling and the El Cielo area. Lunch and time downtown are also listed in the itinerary.

Check the distinction between the crossing and the excursion: the public ferry is shared; the snorkeling boat is private for your group. Booking a private tour does not make the island, reefs or ferry exclusive. This matters if “private” is your main reason for choosing the package.

Cozumel is the stronger fit when the group actively wants to snorkel. It is a less obvious choice if most people prefer to stay dry and the boat outing is only an afterthought. Ask how non-snorkelers can spend each stop before reserving, rather than assuming that every stop provides a walkable beach.

Isla Mujeres: combine snorkeling with island scenery

Isla Mujeres is worth considering when your group wants a boat day without making reefs the only objective. The private Isla Mujeres boat tour describes snorkeling around the island, with planned stops such as MUSA or El Farito subject to access and sea conditions, plus time to enjoy the island.

The practical question is how your particular day divides between snorkeling, swimming and exploring ashore. A photo of Playa Norte is not a promise of several hours on that beach. Request the planned stops and time ashore so that beach lovers and snorkelers know what they are choosing.

Also confirm the mainland embarkation point and crossing arrangements in writing. An independently booked passenger ferry and a guided boat package are different products. Do not use a ferry terminal from a general travel guide as your tour meeting point unless it matches your booking confirmation.

Holbox: prioritize landscapes and the island visit

Holbox is a different kind of day. The private Holbox excursion travels to Chiquilá for a boat outing whose planned route includes Yalahau, Isla Pasión and Holbox, followed by lunch and village time. Sandbar access and individual stops depend on tides, weather and conservation rules.

Choose this option because you want the northern coast and island scenery, rather than expecting it to duplicate a Cozumel reef trip. It involves substantial road and boat travel; the pickup and return estimates from your actual accommodation matter more than a driving time quoted for central Cancún.

Do not build a one-day booking around a guaranteed flamingo sighting, whale shark encounter or nighttime bioluminescence. Wildlife is unpredictable, and those experiences should not be assumed to be included in a daytime Holbox itinerary. If a particular activity is essential to you, ask whether it is available for your dates and part of the product you are considering.

Your accommodation can change the answer

For a traveler staying in Playa del Carmen, the Cozumel ferry gateway is on the same mainland base. A traveler staying in Cancún must account for the transfer south. Conversely, an Isla Mujeres departure in the Cancún area may be more convenient for someone already staying there, while a Riviera Maya guest needs to include the northbound transfer.

Holbox requires reaching Chiquilá before the island portion begins. The useful comparison is therefore hotel pickup to hotel return, not just the crossing. Send the exact accommodation address and ask about the pickup location, transfer supplements and expected return window. Leave some flexibility afterward rather than placing a tightly timed airport transfer immediately after a boat excursion.

What to check for families and mixed swimming abilities

Choose around the people who will participate, not just the destination. Tell the team the children’s ages, everyone’s swimming confidence and any mobility needs. Ask about boarding, equipment sizes, activity requirements and arrangements for anyone remaining out of the water.

A shallow-looking photo does not establish that the sea will be calm on your date. The captain and guide decide which water activities and stops are appropriate. A private booking can help organize your group, but it does not remove weather restrictions or change site rules.

Bring swimwear, a towel, a hat and sun-protective clothing suited to the itinerary. Follow local instructions about equipment and products used before entering the water. Observe marine life without touching, feeding or chasing it; leave coral and starfish where they are.

Compare the total package, not the lowest advertised price

Before choosing between islands, request a quote for the same party size and travel date. Compare the transfer, crossing, boat, guide, equipment, meals and any additional fees. A per-person starting rate is not necessarily the rate for two adults, and children’s pricing should be confirmed separately.

For a private outing, ask which parts are reserved for your group. Cozumel explicitly includes a shared public ferry. For Isla Mujeres and Holbox, have the team confirm the boat and transport arrangements for your date. Read the booking and cancellation terms and ask how a weather-related change would be handled before paying.

A simple way to make your final choice

  • “We want to snorkel, and the reef is the main event.” Start with Cozumel.
  • “We want snorkeling and time enjoying an island.” Compare the Isla Mujeres route and time ashore.
  • “We want sandbars, coastal landscapes and village time.” Consider Holbox and check the complete travel day.

If you are still comparing islands with mainland activities, our guide to choosing a Riviera Maya excursion explains the wider options.

Send Nah Experience your accommodation, date, group size and preferred experience. Mention whether snorkeling, beach time or landscapes comes first so the team can confirm a suitable itinerary and final quote.
